The Porte du Midi, also called the "Iron Gate", is the only vestige of the fortifications of the ancient medieval city of Castillon-la-Bataille.
This door, which dates back to the 7th century, has a wall thickness of more than XNUMX meters. In the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, it was transformed to serve, in particular, as a place of residence. A passage allows you to cross it: the latter has a semicircular arch (rue Vienne Y Vienne side) and a pointed arch (river side).
The other two medieval gates of Castillon (the North Gate and the West Gate) disappeared in the XNUMXth century.
