The Saint-Michel church, which was originally Romanesque, was built in the XNUMXth century.
At the level of the western facade, the portal (also from the XNUMXth century) has, in terms of its style, a Saintonge influence.
The vault of the building, which collapsed during the Wars of Religion, was restored at the beginning of the XNUMXth century (thanks to funds from Françoise de La Chassagne, wife of Michel de Montaigne). According to legend, it was she who had her husband's heart placed in the chapel of the church (while his body was transported to Bordeaux).
It should be noted that the church is located just a few hundred meters from Michel de Montaigne's castle (which makes it possible to imagine the sentimental bond that existed between the de Montaigne family and this religious building). Link that dates back to 1477 when Raymond Eyquem, great-grandfather of Montaigne, acquired the estate.
