In 1908, a young English student, TE Lawrence, developed a passion for the Medieval period. He decides to cycle around France on the track of Richard Coeur de Lion. After Castillon, he goes to St Michel de Montaigne where he will discover with emotion the tower of the Great Man. Then head for the Isle valley. It crosses Montpeyroux, which keeps the traces of a rich history. Past the ruined keep of Gurson castle, it crosses Carsac and Saint Martin and admires their Romanesque churches. Arrived at Ménestérol behind the church, the river bears witness to the arrangements made in the XNUMXth century for river transport. The traditional cob and wood architecture of some houses recalls the proximity of the Double forest. Going up the valley, bridges over the river alternate with tunnels under the railway to Mussidan station.
