The commune of Branne has long been an essential place of passage in the region. This is due to its geographical location, on the banks of the Dordogne river and halfway between Bordeaux and the Dordogne department.
Branne owes its growth to the river trade that developed in the 17th century with the navigation of beautiful barges on the Dordogne. Until the 19th century, the port of Branne maintained significant economic activity, thanks in particular to the wine trade and that of cut stones transported from the surrounding quarries (such as those of Lugaignac and Daignac).
In the XNUMXth century, the town was transformed: the quays were renovated, and the construction of several buildings of great importance was decided: the new hall, the new St. Stephen's Church (neo-Gothic style), or the new Town Hall are born.
In the XNUMXth century, another flagship monument of Branne was also rebuilt: the pont and its impressive metallic structure.
Le weekly market de Branne is an unmissable event in the city. It takes place every Thursday morning and brings together local merchants and producers under the hall (Place du Marché) and in front of the Hôtel de Ville (Place du 11 Novembre 1918).
